G/ Ahangama Rohana Maha Vidyalaya
This school was patronized by P.G.
Agosthienu de Silva of Ahangama, on 2nd
September 1891 with his personal finance and at that time it was known as
“Buddhist English School:
The inaugural principal was
Kanapathi Pillai Nagalingam. The chief object of the patron was to provide
education to the talented poor children of the area free of charge.
A decade after the opening the
school population was highly increased. At the beginning it was a boys’ school
and latter the doors were opened for girls as well and was renamed as “Buddhist
English Mixed School of Ahangama”.
After passing away of Agosthienu de
Silva in 1922 management of it came under Mr. Francis Wickramasuriya. In 1930
the management of the school was vested under Mr. H.W.Amarasuriya. In 1962, when
the schools were taken over by the government, this school also became a
government school.
The school is more than a century
old and presently this is known as G/ Ahangama Rohana Maha Vidyalaya. A good
number of old pupils could be found dispersed all over the island and they
belong to various respectable spheres of professional.
There are classes functioning from
Grade 6 to Grade 13 and present student population is about 860. Every grade has
3 parallel classes and the total number of classes is 22. The staff comprises of
32 teachers.
There are many extra curriculum
activity classes in sports and aesthetic education and students have achieved
credit to school in these fields.
